Abstract. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a new buzzword that is gaining a momentum within the construction industry in Malaysia, and worldwide. BIM is a way of working that involves the automation of the entire project team using a 4D model that can do many of the traditional fuctions of a Quatity Surveyor (QS). As BIM is removing more of the traditional work of QS, there are rising fears that it could threaten the viability of the QS professions especially for small firms that still rely on producing bills of quantities. This paper aims to review the challenges and opportunities gained from BIM advancement in QS profession, especially in Malaysia. Despite of serious cost and commercial challenges of BIM implementation, BIM will work wonder as a tool that will cut the amount of time QS have to spend on analysis and provides opportunities to direct QS talents towards being more efficient. This is resulting to better project coordination with a lot less conflict, a more sustainable building in the final instance and also throughout the process, as less time is spent on each stage.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is seen as a panacea to many of the ills confronting the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector. In spite of its well documented benefits the widespread integration of BIM into the project lifecycle is yet to occur. One commonly identified barrier to BIM adoption is the perceived legal risks associated with its integration, coupled with the need for implementation in a collaborative environment. Many existing standardised contracts used in the Australian AEC industry were drafted before the emergence of BIM. As BIM continues to become ingrained in the delivery process the shortcomings of these existing contracts have become apparent. This paper reports on a study that reviewed and consolidated the contractual and legal concerns associated with BIM implementation. The findings of the review were used to conduct a qualitative content analysis of the GC21 2nd edition, an Australian standardised construction contract, to identify possible changes to facilitate the implementation of BIM in a collaborative environment. The findings identified a number of changes including the need to adopt a collaborative contract structure with equitable risk and reward mechanisms, recognition of the model as a contract document and the need for standardisation of communication/information exchange.

Abstract. The construction industry in Iraq became much more difficult than before because of complexities in the diagrams and documentations in the construction projects. Building information modeling (BIM) started to appear with entry the foreign companies to build the large projects in Iraq. It is a bode well technique for the construction industry, it has many benefits in all project phases from planning and scheduling to operation and demolition phase. This paper concentrated on the implementation of BIM technology and identify the benefits desired and challenges that reduce adoption this technique in the Iraqi construction industry. A qualitative approach has been used to collect data from two experts in the construction field in Iraq to show the factors affected on using BIM in the Iraqi construction firms. The results indicate to a rare implementation of BIM technology among construction professionals in Iraq. The study recommended encouraging the investment in the Iraqi construction markets to share the knowledge and experiences related to BIM technology between the construction professionals.
