Building Information Modelling and Project Information Management Framework for Construction Projects

Abstract: The study aims to develop an effective BIM-project information management framework (BIM-PIMF) and associated assessment model for construction projects with a view to enhancing the functional management of project information. An explanatory case study technique and case study evidence from four BIM construction projects form the study’s research design. The study identified and established the three sub-criteria of the BIM-PIMF model which are the BIM process level factors, BIM product level factors, and the… Show more

“…More so, all the CSFs retained their significance level after the second round of Delphi survey except c7—“availability of financial resources for BIM software, licenses, and its regular upgrades,” which was downgraded by the expert panel from “very important” to “important.” Overall, the factors can be considered critical to amplifying the integration of BIM initiatives and sustainability practices in construction projects. Factors such as c3—“more training programs for cross‐field specialists in BIM and sustainability,” c20—“client requirement and ownership,” and c23—“supportive organizational culture and effective leadership” (Olawumi & Chan, ) are graded “very important” by the expert panel.…”

“…To sum up, these criteria have been highlighted to be mean of a short-term measure of success, particularly when time to market is essential (Shenhar et al, 2001). Success in project management has gone beyond its traditional dimensions; many factors have been recently highlighted as main contributors of success such as managerial soft skills and liaison channels to communicate the way success is judged (Olawumi and Chan, 2019). Since the limitations of the traditional way of measuring success are, unquestionably obvious, then scholars and practitioners have become interested in introducing new success measures (Barber, 2004;Carvalho and Rabechini Junior, 2015;Ika, 2009;Jugdev and Müller, 2005;Samset, 1998;Shenhar and Dvir, 2007).…”

“…The CAD-based process limits the reusability of project data through the whole building life cycle. Compared with the traditional CAD-based method, Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology is able to represent the geometry, properties, and relations of building objects based on the object-oriented method [2]. In the early stage of BIM technology, its purpose is to make a complete model available for every participant.…”

“…Besides the native model filtering for export, some software products provide the functionality for exporting IFC files. For example, IFC Translator in ArchiCAD [10] can be used to export different IFC models according to options: (1) selected elements only; (2) visible elements, on either all stories or the current story; (3) entire project. The first and second options are used for partial model extraction, and the third option is for the complete one.…”
