Building Digital Collections Using Open Source Digital Repository Software:

Abstract: The last decade a great number of digital library and digital repository systems have been developed and published as open-source software. The variety of available software systems is a factor of confusion when an organization is planning to build a repository infrastructure to host its collections. To simplify the decision process five widely used open-source repository software systems are compared, namely DSpace, Fedora, Greenstone, EPrints and Invenio. In addition to the comparison of these software syste… Show more

“…They suggested that digital publications should be included in the IR. Choosing among the variety of available software systems becomes a huge task when an organization plans to build a repository infrastructure to host its collections (Pyrounakis, Nikolaidou, & Hatzopoulos, 2014). However, the success of IR is dependent on the contribution of researchers and faculty members (Alemayehu, 2010).…”

“…In the most recent decade, an incredible number of digital library (DL) and digital repository (DR) frameworks have been created and distributed as OSS. The variety of accessible software frameworks turns into an analytical pain when an association intends to develop a repository to have its collections preserved (Pyrounakis et al , 2014; Tiemo and Ebiagbe, 2016). DSpace, Eprints, Fedora, Greenstone and Invenio are some of the most useful and famous open-source DL software.…”

“…A digital library is a special library constructed based on computer network (Internet), where all kinds of books and documents are of digitalization, and all kinds of information services and management are of virtualization (Han et al , 2019; Wu et al , 2021a), i.e. a digital library is a virtual library without wall, a shareable and expandable knowledge system constructed based on computer network and a distributed and easy to use digital information platform with no limits of time and space (Pyrounakis et al , 2017). With the rapid development of network technology, the scope of a digital library is being continuously extended, which has spread all aspects of human society and become an important part of people's daily life in the digital information age (Mohammad, 2017).…”
