Building ambidextrous organizations through intellectual capital: a proposal for a multilevel model

Abstract: Purpose: This paper proposes an alternative theoretical model to describe, from a multilevel perspective, the way in which ambidexterity is built across different organizational levels, through specific combinations of intellectual capital dimensions-human, social and organizational capital. Originality/value: The paper expands the extant literature in the field, describing different paths to achieving organizational ambidexterity. The configurational approach adopted adds value to the proposed model, as it h… Show more

“…(2015) developed a cross-level model examining the antecedents and performance consequences of the ambidexterity of unit-based structures by emphasizing the importance of studying the unique effects of the various facets of intellectual capital. Inspired by these previous studies, Fernández et al . (2017) further explored how different alternative combinations of human, social and organizational capital influence the processes by which organizations complement exploration and exploitation activities, thus introducing multilevel IC foundations to explain the process whereby the HC of individuals is transformed and leveraged.…”

“…We found that a few studies have focused on IC arguments to explain how companies achieve ambidextrous behaviors through the combination and management of their dimensions, i.e. HC, RC and OC (Kang and Snell, 2009;Fern andez et al, 2017;Del Giudice et al, 2021), but none have applied these ideas to understand IC dynamics in the EE context. Thus, as the third step of the analysis, we identified the correspondence between our first-order concepts and the three categories of explorative IC (i.e.…”

“…Using case study analysis, Wang and Jiang (2009) and Güttel et al (2015) show that becoming an ambidextrous organization requires focusing not only on the whole business's perspective but also on an organization's lower levels, i.e., managers, teams and individual staff. In their proposal of a multilevel theoretical model of building ambidextrous organizations through intellectual capital, Fernández-Pérez de la Lastra et al (2017) presents the extension of this point of view. This paper links the multilevel strategy to the next noticeable common topic, introducing an ambidextrous organization's models.…”
