Building a blockchain-based decentralized ecosystem for cloud and edge computing: an ALLSTAR approach and empirical study

Abstract: Cloud computing has been one of the disruptive technologies to change the traditional application operation for the last decades. The success of Cloud boosts ever more newly-built data centers. Although these data centers are distributed all around the world, the computing resources are managed in a relatively centralized manner within one big data center. For a specific small area, the centralized Cloud lacks the dispersion to satisfy the requirements of collaborative applications, e.g., the nearest data cent… Show more

“…Edge computing can solve the problem of a centralized cloud lacking the dispersion required for collaborative applications. To tackle the trust and incentive model issue, Zhou, Shi [33] proposed ALLSTAR, a blockchain technology framework that enhances the trust between the cloud and edge resources to facilitate seamless integration. In this investigation, the authors examine the challenges in using distributed cloud and edge resources and propose a new business model based on permissioned blockchains.…”

“…It can unify the communication at different levels of the edge network through software support and hardware virtualization methods. Huan [35] proposed the ALLSTAR ecosystem, which contains four subsystems to accomplish this task. Heterogeneity-AS-code toolKIT (HASKIT) and CRoss-Edge seamless infrAstructure orchestration Framework (CREAF) focus on software perspective to establish a model to describe heterogeneous services and provide the relationship between levels Interface.…”

“…Blockchain-based dApps rely on smart contracts, which are computer programs that run on the blockchain and perform actions based on inputs without intermediate processing. The marketplaces for cloud services are of particular interest since cloud services are generally provisioned by large providers on a single platform [5], [6], [7]. Examples of this are Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud, among others [8].…”
