There is a significant increase in the application of laminated glass panel in the modern and innovative construction industry. Glass element is frequently used as a structural component because of its aesthetic and allows abundance of daylight shining in through in which leads to energy saving. The glazing consists of two thin glass plates bonded together by a thin core material called polyvinyl-butyral (PVB). A laminated glass panel is typically brittle and slender, thus frequently subjected to buckling. This paper focuses on the load-carrying behaviour of laminated glass panel supported merely along four edges subjected to compressive force. A 1 m x 1 m laminated glass panel with glass plies of 8 mm thick and the interlayer thickness of 1.52 mm is modeled and analyzed through nonlinear static analysis by using ABAQUS finite element (FE) analysis software. The behaviour of the laminated glass panel under buckling and post-buckling analysis was presented. Analytical approach by Zenkert’s formulation based on the theory of sandwich is utilized to validate the technique used to build the FE model of the glass panel. Essentially, the critical buckling load and the load-displacement relationship are in a good agreement with the analytical formulation and the empirical study respectively. In addition, the significant effect of the interlayer and the slenderness aspect of the panel are also studied. This involves parametric analysis of the configuration of the different interlayer stiffness and the aspect ratio length to width (a/b) of the glass panel. It was found that the rate of decrement of buckling load is indirectly proportionate to the rate of increment of (a/b) ratio. This study also shows that the buckling load of a laminated glass panel depended very much on the slenderness aspect of the structure.

Load-bearing elements composed of glass, as known, are often susceptible to buckling collapse mechanisms. This intrinsic characteristic (and thus potential limitation for design) typically derives from the use of relatively small thicknesses to cover large spans and surfaces, thus resulting in a multitude of columns, beams, or plates that are characterized by high slenderness. In the literature, accordingly, several and design propositions support of the definition of efficient calculation models to capture the typical buckling response of glass elements variably shaped, sized, restrained and loaded. In this study, the attention is focused on the buckling analysis of glass columns and on the assessment of uncertainties due to input random parameters. With the support of finite element numerical models, a total of 800 glass columns are investigated, by accounting for stochastic variations in the geometry (size and thickness), modulus of elasticity and density of glass, maximum amplitude of the imposed initial imperfection, material type. Based on the Monte Carlo simulation method, the final result takes the form of 2400 simulations, where the postprocessing analysis is spent on the derivation of empirical formulations for the correlation of the relevant buckling capacity indicators. From the global out-of-plane bending analysis, the input random parameters are observed to affect severely both long and short columns with different flexural stiffness. Besides, a stable linear correlation is found for some influencing indicators. The attention is thus focused on the sensitivity analysis of critical buckling load, ultimate failure configuration, deflection at collapse, buckling reduction coefficient.

Glass is largely used in buildings as a novel construction material. Due to the intrinsic mechanical properties of such material, however, specific design recommendations are demanded in order to offer appropriate “fail-safe” requirements. This is especially true in the case of load-bearing structural glass elements where redundancy, stability and residual resistance should be guaranteed. In this regard, based also on a past research effort, the paper experimentally investigates the structural performance of full-scale square hollow glass columns, whose resisting cross-section consists of four adhesively joined laminated glass panes. Impact tests are carried out on in-plane compressed specimens, including both a reference undamaged column and a deliberately, preliminary broken specimen. The effects of multiple impact test configurations (inclusive of various release configurations for the impact mass as well as type of impact body) are hence emphasized, with critical discussion of the observed overall results and failure mechanisms
