Bucket-Handle Tear of the Medial Meniscus in a 2-Year-Old Child

Abstract: Bucket-handle meniscal tears are extremely rare injuries in the pediatric population. Given the known sequelae of meniscal tears and the development of osteoarthritis, early diagnosis and treatment of pediatric meniscal tears are essential. The communication barrier between physicians and pediatric patients, however, creates difficulties in making the correct diagnosis of meniscal pathology. Providers should have a low threshold for obtaining further confirmatory advanced imaging if patients present with prolo… Show more

“…Furthermore, repair of a torn meniscus, especially when the tear is in the inner avascular region, is not always feasible [1,10]. Some in vivo meniscus tears occur suddenly, suggestive of immediate rupture from a single overload event [11][12][13][14][15][16][17], whereas others grow over time [18,19]. Although short (less than 5-10 mm) tears often do not merit immediate clinical concern [15,[20][21][22], they have the potential to grow and become more serious with time.…”

“…The youngest reported bucket handle tears in the literature involved two and four-year-old patients. These both involved the medial meniscus (Nooh et al 2016;Fink et al 2018;Bloome et al 2000;Saddawi and Hoffman 1970). Another case report detailed a bucket handle tear of a lateral meniscus in a six-year-old girl treated with a subtotal meniscectomy.…”
