Bubbles alive

Abstract: We propose a hybrid method for simulating multiphase fluids such as bubbly water. The appearance of subgrid visual details is improved by incorporating a new bubble model based on smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) into an Eulerian grid-based simulation that handles background flows of large bodies of water and air. To overcome the difficulty in simulating small bubbles in the context of the multiphase flows on a coarse grid, we heuristically model the interphase properties of water and air by means of the … Show more

“…Undesired damping can also be introduced to the PBD framework too. To deal with this problem, the vorticity confinement method introduced by Fedkiw et al [2001] and extended by Hong et al [2008] and Lentine et al [2011] is adopted. The XSPH method [Monaghan 1989;Schechter and Bridson 2012] is also adopted to provide better particle distributions in the simulation.…”

“…Later work has yielded increasingly realistic behavior, and often used these models to add bubble details to traditional volumetric liquid simulations [Greenwood and House 2004;Hong et al 2008;Kim et al 2010;Busaryev et al 2012;Patkar et al 2013].…”

“…Hong et al . [HLYK08] proposed a hybrid SPH‐grid method that simulates the motion of water and air with a grid and the bubbling details with SPH particles. Chentanez and Müller [CM10] adopted the shallow water equation to simulate water in real‐time and utilized particles to capture the small scale features such as spray, splash, and foam.…”
