BSafe-360: An All-in-One Naturalistic Cycling Data Collection Tool

Abstract: The popularity of bicycles as a mode of transportation has been steadily increasing. However, concerns about cyclist safety persist due to a need for comprehensive data. This data scarcity hinders accurate assessment of bicycle safety and identification of factors that contribute to the occurrence and severity of bicycle collisions in urban environments. This paper presents the development of the BSafe-360, a novel multi-sensor device designed as a data acquisition system (DAS) for collecting naturalistic cycl… Show more

“…Moreover, enhancements in the information quality provided by the underlying sensor system, including aspects such as accuracy, reliability, sampling rate, aggregation level, latency, and privacy, could substantially improve the efficacy of our analyses and estimation tools. Investigating the potential integration of advanced sensor technologies or protocols within bicycle network [ 4 , 22 , 50 ] may yield richer and more granular data, thereby enhancing the overall reliability and precision of insights derived from the sensor system.…”

“…In recent years, the bicycle has gained significant momentum in terms of everyday use and thus policy importance, with the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany in the lead in terms of the highest bicycle usage [ 1 , 2 ]. This surge in popularity is partly due to the advent of e-bikes and the lifestyle changes brought about by the COVID era, leading to an unprecedented increase in cycling [ 3 , 4 ]. From a policy perspective, bicycles are increasingly considered a sustainable substitute for short- to medium-distance car journeys (up to 10 km for regular bikes up to 20 km for electric bikes) [ 5 ].…”
