Brownout Approach for Adaptive Management of Resources and Applications in Cloud Computing Systems

Abstract: Cloud computing has been regarded as an emerging approach to provisioning resources and managing applications. It provides attractive features, such as an on-demand model, scalability enhancement, and management cost reduction. However, cloud computing systems continue to face problems such as hardware failures, overloads caused by unexpected workloads, or the waste of energy due to inefficient resource utilization, which all result in resource shortages and application issues such as delays or saturation. A p… Show more

“…Cloud computing has the potential to transform a large part of the IT industry and to make the software even more attractive as a service as well as to shape the way IT hardware is designed, utilized, and purchased [1]. The success of any cloud management software critically depends on the flexibility, scale, and efficiency with which it can utilize the underlying hardware resources while providing necessary performance isolation [2].…”

“…Various algorithms and controllers have been employed to extend the brownout-concept as originally envisioned, including how it can be used to optimize both service delivery [9], [10], [11], [12], [13] and cloud infrastructure power consumption [14], [15], [16]. These results validate the claim that great utility and efficiency increases can be made using a qualityreduction approach.…”
