In this paper, we systematically explore the attack surface of the Blockchain technology, with an emphasis on public Blockchains. Towards this goal, we attribute attack viability in the attack surface to 1) the Blockchain cryptographic constructs, 2) the distributed architecture of the systems using Blockchain, and 3) the Blockchain application context. To each of those contributing factors, we outline several attacks, including selfish mining, the 51% attack, Domain Name System (DNS) attacks, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, consensus delay (due to selfish behavior or distributed denial-of-service attacks), Blockchain forks, orphaned and stale blocks, block ingestion, wallet thefts, smart contract attacks, and privacy attacks. We also explore the causal relationships between these attacks to demonstrate how various attack vectors are connected to one another. A secondary contribution of this work is outlining effective defense measures taken by the Blockchain technology or proposed by researchers to mitigate the effects of these attacks and patch associated vulnerabilities.

Case law is the term that refers to reports of past court decisions. It is considered an essential source of law, vital for legal professionals. Existing case law services are currently centralized, with an entity having complete control over the data and often charging fees for its access and other adding value services. This paper attempts to leverage the potential of blockchain technology in order to develop a public and decentralized platform that allows the submission of court decisions in a decentralized database and employs a network of curators who offer their validation, classification, and evaluation. Specifically, we design, analyze and implement AnyCase, a proof-of-concept prototype system on the Ethereum platform. We focus on the establishment of a sybil-resistant voting protocol used for reaching agreement and the development of a tokenized economy that incentivizes participation. Our preliminary analysis indicates that, besides being decentralized, AnyCase has the potential to compete with existing centralized systems in several other aspects.

The Blockchain-Enabled E-Voting uses a digital-currency analogy where in eligible voters can cast a ballot anonymously using a computing environment. BEV employs an encrypted key, smart biometrics and tamperproof realtime personal ID verification. Blockchain enable the creation of tamper-proof audit trails for voting. The idea of adapting digital voting systems to make the public electoral process cheaper, faster and easier, is a compelling one in modern society which normalizes it in the eyes of the voters, removes a certain power barrier between the voter and the elected candidate, thus making it an effective way for casting vote in this generation of technology.
