Bronchus Suis: A Case Series in a Tertiary Hospital in Cebu City

Abstract

Background: Bronchus suis is an abnormal bronchus arising from the lateral wall of the trachea and is directed to the upper lobes. It is a rare congenital anomaly with an incidence of 0.1 to 2% globally. Objectives: This case series aimed to present the different clinical manifestations of bronchus suis along with literature review regarding the theories of embryology, diagnostic modalities, treatment, and prognosis. Cases: The cases presented were all female pediatric patients ranging from two months to two years old. Two of the cases were born preterm with the other being a term delivery. Of the three cases, two were admitted due to recurrent pneumonia. All cases were admitted at a tertiary hospital in Cebu City and underwent computed tomography showing bronchus suis. All cases were managed medically with antibiotic therapy. Summary and Recommendations: The purpose of this case series is to present the different clinical manifestations of bronchus suis along with its medical implications, diagnostic modalities, and treatment. Although rare, the diagnosis of a congenital lung anomaly such as bronchus suis should not be immediately ruled out in patients with history of recurrent pulmonary infections.
