Background: Simulation based medical education is efficient for the acquisition of flexible bronchoscopy navigational skills and the knowledge of the tracheobronchial anatomy. However, bronchoscopy simulator training is not routinely integrated into pneumologic fellowship programs or undergraduate medical education for time and/or cost reasons. Our study compares the effect of self-guided bronchoscopy simulator training versus tutor guided training on the acquisition of navigational skills and knowledge of the bronchial anatomy. Methods: 3rd -year undergraduate medical students were randomized to either a tutor- or simulator guided bronchoscopy simulator training focusing on the acquisition of navigational skills and the knowledge of the tracheobronchial anatomy. Every student performed a baseline bronchoscopy followed by a structured bronchoscopy simulator training and finally an assessment bronchoscopy at the end of the training program. Groups were compared by means of a repeated measurement ANOVA and effect sizes calculated as Cohens’ d. Results: 54 eligible students participated in the study. Knowledge of the tracheobronchial anatomy significantly increased from pre- to post training (all p < 0.001; all d > 2), navigational skills significantly decreased (all p < 0.005; all d < 1). There were no significant differences between groups. Conclusion: Short-time simulator guided bronchoscopy training improves knowledge of the tracheobronchial anatomy in novice bronchoscopists as much as tutor guided training, but navigational skills seem to worsen in both groups. Further studies assessing transfer to clinical practice are needed to find the optimal teaching method for basic flexible bronchoscopy.

Background: Due to the limited human resource and medical materials, the mortality of children under-5 was high in Tanzania. Systematic and effective training programs for pediatric medical staffs are required. Thus, aim of this study was to describe and test a simulation training program of pediatric technology for doctors and nurses in Zanzibar.Methods: A simulation training program of pediatric appropriated technology was designed and performed in this quasi-experimental study, in which pre-post self-reported of pediatric knowledge (scoring 0-100) of participants were calculated to analysis the effectiveness of this simulation training in Apr, 2018 and Oct, 2018. Correctly answering of items≥80% was considered to be a pass. Data were entered and analyzed in SPSS 22.0 software to test the hypothesis. Results: 56 participants were finally included in this study with 27 doctors and 29nurses. Pre and post test scores of pediatric knowledge were at mean 44.32 (SD 9.53) versus mean 82.11 (SD 11.06) respectively, p<0.0001. The most effective training domain was (pediatric life support) at 44(78.57). Passing rate of pediatric knowledge increased dramatically after training with p value less than 0.0001. Although there was a mild difference between doctors and nurses at scoring of pre-test (p=0.048), the training effect between them had no statistical differences (p>0.05).Conclusion: The scenario simulation training course of pediatric appropriated technology could significantly improve pediatric knowledge for doctors and nurses in Zanzibar. It might be further promoted as one effective module of training in health foreign aid.

A scoping review on the trends of digital anatomy education

Digital technologies are changing the landscape of anatomy education. To reveal the trend of digital anatomy education across medical science disciplines, searches were performed using PubMed, EMBASE, and MEDLINE bibliographic databases for research articles published from January 2010 to June 2021 (inclusive). The search was restricted to publications written in English language and to articles describing teaching tools in undergraduate and postgraduate anatomy and pre‐vocational clinical anatomy training courses. Among 156 included studies across six health disciplines, 35% used three‐dimensional (3D) digital printing tools, 24.2% augmented reality (AR), 22.3% virtual reality (VR), 11.5% web‐based programs, and 4.5% tablet‐based apps. There was a clear discipline‐dependent preference in the choice and employment of digital anatomy education. AR and VR were the more commonly adopted digital tools for medical and surgical anatomy education, while 3D printing is more broadly used for nursing, allied health and dental health education compared to other digital resources. Digital modalities were predominantly adopted for applied interactive anatomy education and primarily in advanced anatomy curricula such as regional anatomy and neuroanatomy. Moreover, there was a steep increase in VR anatomy combining digital simulation for surgical anatomy training. There is a consistent increase in the adoption of digital modalities in anatomy education across all included health disciplines. AR and VR anatomy incorporating digital simulation will play a more prominent role in medical education of the future. Combining multimodal digital resources that supports blended and interactive learning will further modernize anatomy education, moving medical education further away from its didactic history.
