…ZET SUMMARYAs a very serious reason of accidental deaths in childhood, we have aimed to investigate deaths due to foreign body aspiration (FBA), since its incidence has not decreased despite advances in the techniques and instruments for its emergency treatment.We retrospectively reviewed the records of forensic cases due to FBA examined at the DiyarbakÝr Branch of the Council of Forensic Medicine between 1990 and 2003. Over this period this office investigated 8330 medicolegal deaths cases, 22 of which were children under 15 years of age due to FBA.Of the victims, 14 (63.6%) were male and 8 (36.4%) were females. The mean age of the victims was 2.2±0.6 years. There were 20 (90.9 %) children between 1 and 3 years, and two other cases at 2/12 and 5 years of ages. All fatal aspirations occurred at home. Food was the most commonly aspirated foreign body in 81.8% of the cases, nuts being the most common in 50%. Carina (54.5%) was the most common site of the foreign body in the respiratory tract.In conclusion, food asphyxiation remains a common problem particularly in children between 1 and 3 years of age in our region. Introduction: Although foreign body aspiration (FBA) can be a life-threatening event, it still can be Preventable. One of the most important risk factors for FBA is a lack of knowledge by the caregivers. Moreover, there are only a few publications evaluating parental knowledge, and none of them address the parents' level of education. Aim of the study:The primary aim is to evaluate parental knowledge of foreign body aspiration among Saudis, and to correlate FBA knowledge with parental level of education; the secondary aim is to choose the most suitable method to spread the knowledge of FBA prevention, and to compare parental knowledge of FBA between Saudis and other nations.Method: A15 FBA-related items questionnaire was developed. The questionnaires were distributed to parents attending routine check up in different outpatient clinics across the two largest advanced secondary hospitals in Dammam city located in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.Results: Out of the 500 questionnaires distributed, 452 were recovered and mothers answered most of them. Only17 questionnaires were incomplete and excluded, while 435 questionnaires were analyzed. The studied group was divided into two groups based on level of education; the first group is the middle and high school graduates and was about 55%, and the rest, 45%, were the college graduates. One third of the parents in both studied groups did not recognize a small toy, and/or peanuts as a cause of FBA. Regarding clinical presentation of FBA, 14% and 27% of mothers did not know that sudden choking and coughing were symptoms suggesting FBA, respectively. No statistical significant difference in both studied groups (p-value = 0.785). Conclusion:A substantial number of parents globally including Saudis lack knowledge regarding FBA even among college graduates. To prevent FBA, and to make timely diagnoses, parents should have a thorough continuous education regarding FBA risks, presentation, and management.

A 10 month-old infant was given a Lychee Mini Fruity Gel (AP Frozen Foods Ltd, Thailand) by his mother while shopping in a supermarket. The child was sucking on the gel when he began to choke and have difficulty breathing. Emergency medical services were called, and paramedics found the child to be in respiratory arrest with a palpable pulse of 40 beats/min. They transported him to the pediatric emergency department, performing bag-valve-mask ventilation with a manual resuscitator. The child was intubated and taken to the operating room for bronchoscopy and then the pediatric intensive care unit for critical care. The initial report was that he choked on gelatin. However, he was found to have aspirated a large hard gel found in the lychee-flavored candy that totally obstructed his airway. This is the third case of aspiration of a gel candy we have seen in 5 years. Parents should be warned not to give these candies to children younger than 5 years.
