Bronchogenic cyst of the left lower lobe associated with severe hemoptysis

Abstract: Bronchogenic cysts result from congenital disorders, are often asymptomatic at diagnosis, but complications are not uncommon. We report the case of a 19-year-old woman with severe hemoptysis. This rare presentation of an intrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst should be considered as differential diagnosis in patients with cavernous lesion of a lobe. Surgery was performed as a diagnostic and therapeutic measure.

“…Therefore early surgical intervention prevents future complications [3][4][5]9]. In the presented study, comparison of complicated BCs with simple BCs considering complications revealed that complications occur more frequently in complicated BCs, which is statistically meaningful (P = 0.026).…”

“…The cavity within the parenchyma was closed with capitonnage. We suggest that epithelial layer should be destroyed with utmost care and attention, since recurrence may occur if a full de-epithelisation fails [3][4][5]9,15,16]. Two cases (18.2%) in Group II, in which we performed partial excision with de-epithelisation showed recurrence, as well.…”

“…Intrapulmonary cysts were more often symptomatic than mediastinal cysts [8]. Sometimes, life-threatening complications, such as hemoptysis or respiratory distress, may occur [9,10]. In this study, 13 patients (54.2%) were symptomatic, and the most common symptom was cough, and symptoms in relation to location were not statistically meaningful.…”
