Bronchial allergen provocation: A useful method to assess the efficacy of specific immunotherapy in children

Abstract: After 1 yr of SCIT against HDM, 60.7% of the patients observed in this study exhibited significant improvements, as defined by BAP. However, BAP was also able to identify the non-responders to treatment. Thus, BAP is a useful and objective method of estimating the effectiveness of SCIT and is not influenced by a placebo effect.

“…Earlier studies from our working group showed that BAP is a safe and highly reproducible method in children and adults suffering from respiratory diseases . Although great effort has been put into standardizing the procedure, BAP is still rarely used by clinicians due to possible side‐effects and the fear of severe asthmatic reactions . For safety reasons, only patients with mild CF (FEV1 > 75%) and proven sensitization to A fumigatus underwent BAP.…”

“…Pediatric data are scarce due to safety and feasibility concerns. Rosewich et al evaluated SIT in house‐dust‐mite allergic children with BAP compared to established tools, such as symptom‐ and medication‐scores and surrogate markers (e.g., IgE and IgG4). The authors could clearly demonstrate that BAP is feasible and safe in children older than five years of age.…”
