“…Among the DDTs analyzed, p,p 0 -DDE was detectable in all samples and constituted more than 97% of RDDTs, which was consistent with the most previous publications (Fernie and Letcher, 2010;Jaspers et al, 2005Jaspers et al, , 2006. For PCBs, CB-153, -138, -180, and -118 were the most abundant congeners in all the species (Fig.…”

“…The dominance of DDTs in total OHPs was also measured in birds collected from the Yellow River Delta, North China (Gao et al, 2009). The results of the aforementioned study differed from the findings on the peregrine falcon in Canada (Fernie and Letcher, 2010) or on the little owl in Belgium (Jaspers et al, 2005), in which the largest proportion of total OHPs was contributed by PCBs, followed by PBDEs and/or DDTs. This may be attributed to the relatively small contribution of China to the global production and consumption on PCBs (Xing et al, 2005), along with the historically agrochemical influence in the studied region.…”

“…HBCDs were found in cormorant liver (Phalacrocorax carbo) from The Netherlands (37), in peregrine falcon eggs (Falco peregrinus) from Sweden (71), and in guillemot eggs (Uria aalge) from areas around the Baltic Sea (73), at concentrations spanning 2 orders of magnitude up to 7100 ng/g lw (Table SI 5 concentrations fell within the range of the other studies. HBCDs were found in 2 out of 40 little owl (Athene noctua) eggs from Belgium (72). Low concentrations of HBCDs (<80 ng/g lw) were found in eggs of Arctic birds (31,76), suggesting that input to the Arctic is predominantly due to long-range transport.…”

“…Only few studies have investigated the occurrence of HBCDs in birds (31,32,37,62,(71)(72)(73)(74)(75)(76). “…From another point of view, to study the levels of these compounds in water and soil is of interest, since it is currently applied in monitoring for environmental contamination. 15 The analysis of PCBs in environmental samples usually involves extraction of the analytes from the matrix, subsequent clean up of the extracts, and final chromatographic analysis. Soxhlet extraction (SE), 16 accelerated solvent extraction (ASE), 17 stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), 18 solid phase extraction (SPE) 19 and matrix solid phase dispersion (MSPD) 20 have been applied as extraction techniques in trace analysis.…”
