Bromelain’s penetration into the blood and sinonasal mucosa in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis

Abstract: The aim of this research is to investigate penetration of Bromelain into sinonasal mucosa in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) versus a control group. Bromelain is derived from pineapple (Ananas comosus) and has various pharmacological effects. 40 patients (20 patients and 20 controls) were enrolled in the study. Bromelain 500 mg tablet twice daily was administered for 30 days. We scored bromelain presence in turbinate and ethmoid mucosas and in the serum of both the groups. Bromelain has an excellent… Show more

“…A decrease in the severity of pain, swelling, or signs of inflammation was observed. According to Passali et al [178], an appropriate bromelain's biological activity level may be due to its excellent distribution by diffusion from the blood to rhinosinusal mucosa.…”

“…Other extracts have been shown to possess activity against coronaviruses, mediated through inhibition of viral entry and/or replication, or through an as-yet unknown antiviral mechanism [ 67 ]. In the respiratory setting, bromelain has demonstrated good distribution to serum and rhinosinusal tissues when administered as a tablet in people with chronic rhinosinusitis showing relief of symptoms [ 68 , 69 ]. In children with acute sinusitis, bromelain was associated with a faster recovery from symptoms without side effects (except in one participant with a pineapple allergy) when compared with children receiving one of the combination therapies (bromelain + standard treatment) and children receiving standard treatments only [ 70 ].…”

“…In children, the most commonly aspirated foreign bodies are peanuts. Tooth aspiration is uncommon 1,3 . Most cases occur secondary to trauma, 4 so the aspiration of an exfoliated primary tooth is extremely rare, with only three cases described in the literature 2 .…”
