Brodie’s Abscess of the Radius in a Child

Abstract: We herein report an unusual case of Brodie's abscess of the radius in a child. A 13-year-old boy presented with pain on his right distal forearm. A plain radiograph showed an 8 cm translucent lesion in the distal radius. MRI showed a penumbra sign on the T1-weighted image, hyperintensity on T2-weighted images, and ring enhancement on the contrast-enhanced T1 image. F-FDG PET/CT images showed an uptake at the margin of the radius. Curettage and iliac cancellous bone grafting were undertaken for Brodie's abscess… Show more

“…9 In a report by Takeuchi et al, the curettage of the lesion and cancellous bone grafting were successful in the forearm although the microbial culturing test showed negative results. 11 In a study by Stepha and MacAuley on 21 cases of Brodie's abscess, eight recurrence cases were observed and the probability of recurrence increased when the initial ESR was above 44 mm/h. 12 Therefore, in this case, aggressive surgical curettage and long-term antibiotic therapy are recommended.…”

“…12 Therefore, in this case, aggressive surgical curettage and long-term antibiotic therapy are recommended. 11 Based on the results obtained by Olasinde et al on patients with 20 Brodie's abscess treated with curettage and cancellous bone grafting, the use of iliac followed by antibiotic therapy for 6 weeks resulted in excellent recurrence-free outcomes. 13 Rajakulendran et al reported Brodie's abscess in the radius of a 16-year-old boy long (5 years) after percutaneous pinning for the treatment of a distal radius fracture.…”

“…Olasinde et al [ 9 ] reported that there was only one case of Brodie’s abscess of the radius among a series of 20 cases. Takeuchi et al [ 7 ] also reported one case of Brodie’s abscess occurring in the radius.…”

“…5 d). Previous reports indicated that bone grafting after curettage is necessary for large abscesses [ 3 , 7 ]. However, since the upper extremities are areas of unloaded bone, autogenous bone grafting was not performed.…”

“…Previous research has shown that osteolytic lesions can appear not only in malignancies but also in benign conditions, including infectious diseases, cysts, and benign tumors. [3][4][5][6][7][8] Consequently, osteolytic lesions characterized by increased 68 Ga-FAPI activity might not solely be indicative of bone metastases. Brodie abscess should be considered in the differential diagnosis of osteolytic lesions with increased 68 Ga-FAPI uptake.…”
