Broadband Vibration Suppression Assessment of Negative Impedance Shunts

Abstract: Piezoelectric materials allow for the manipulation of stiffness and damping properties of host structures by the application of electrical shunting networks. The use of piezoelectric patches for broadband control of vibration using a negative impedance shunt has been shown to be an effective active control solution. The wave-tuning and minimization of reactive input power shunt selection methodologies require the use a negative capacitance. This paper shows that the two theories are comparative and obtain the … Show more

“…These two shunt tuning theories obtain equal shunting values, specifically a negative capacitance component. Negative impedance shunts allow for a broadband reduction in vibration velocity when applied on beams 11 . Circuit stability of the negative impedance shunts does not allow for creation of optimal tuning values, therefore there are experimental limitations of these tuning theories 12 .…”

“…4 Recently, much effort has been spent on developing new multi-functional structures integrating electro-mechanical systems in order to optimize their vibroacoustic behavior over a larger frequency band of interest. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] For Medium Frequency band, some specific approaches have been developed such as metacomposite concept firstly introduced in. 14, 15 This concept couples two different aspects in vibration control.…”

“…impedance mismatch zones) and lumped nature of electric networks, as well as the corresponding experimental prototype, have been proposed by Dell'Isola and Maurini [45]. In terms of piezoelectric periodic structures with negative capacitance shunting networks, Beck [29,46] proposed a system which is shown theoretically and experimentally to yield significant broadband vibration suppression. Huang [47] also firstly investigated wave energy diffusion characteristics and forced response of beam structures with Resistive-Negative capacitance shunted piezoelectric patches.…”

“…Although the negative capacitance shunting method has been demonstrated successfully, the stability of the circuit may confine the practical implementation of the method. Therefore, many studies [26][27][28][29] have focused on enhancing the circuit stability. However, negative capacitance shunt can only be realized by operational amplifiers which require external power supply.…”
