The general theory for oscillator and mixer design is applied to develop an X-band self-mixing oscillator antenna. The antenna uses a Gunn diode as the active device that provides the oscillations and self-mixing operations. The circuit uses a slotline ring resonator for frequency stabilization and can be modified to include a varactor diode for wide-band frequency tuning. The circuit performance is compared with theoretical results derived from simple transmission-line models. The radiation patterns of the self-mixing oscillator antenna are also compared with those measured from a similarly configured passive antenna. Since the radiated power also serves as the local oscillator (LO) frequency for the self-mixing operation, the circuit is useful as a half-duplex transceiver. When the self-mixing operation is not required, a single oscillator antenna can be used as a transmitter and several units can be assembled in a planar array for spatial powercombining applications.

Abstract-This paper introduces a mobile switchable antenna for long term evolution (LTE) of the 4th generation (4G), applicable to all mobile service bands. The validity of this antenna is assessed by design, realization, and measurement. A new frequency-selecting method is used in the proposed antenna, based on capacitance switching among four states. Due to the limited antenna space in existing terminals, it is quite difficult to cover the entire low band with a single antenna. To overcome this difficulty, three singlepole double-throw (SPDT) switches, one 74HC04, and four capacitors are used. The resulting antenna covers the LTE (698-798 MHz) and GSM (824-960 MHz) bands in the low-band characteristic by realizing four capacitance states and at the same time covers the DCS (1710-1880 MHz)/PCS (1850-1990 MHz)/WCDMA (1920( -2170 bands in the high-band characteristic. The antenna provides a gain of −1.04-6.00 dBi, a radiation efficiency of 32.73-74.99%, and omnidirectional characteristics in the H-plane. Because of this outstanding performance, it is expected that the new frequencyselecting technique will be applied in 4G mobile communication terminals.

Design of tunable Gunn diode-based active antenna module including a new type of planar dielectric resonator (PDR) tuned by a ferroelectric (FE) varactor is presented. The module is designed in such a way that the PDR acts both as a stabilizing resonator and as a radiator. MW properties of FE elements used for VCO tuning are considered. The module operates at frequency around of 17 GHz and demonstrates the radiated power of 8.8 ± 0.1 dBm over the 130 MHz tuning range and a phase-noise level of −95 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset. 65 • width of the radiation pattern in both the E and H planes corresponding to a gain of 5.1 dBi was measured. The maximal VCO power limited by the dielectric nonlinearity of a FE film in the microwave electric field and by the FE film overheating is estimated for FE film-based varactors of the planar and parallel structures.
