Broadband Dual-Polarized Loop Cross-Dipole Antenna for 5G Base Station Applications

A broadband dual-polarized base station antenna is proposed in this paper. The antenna consists of loop cross-dipoles, Y-shaped coupling feeding lines, and a metal box reflector. An equivalent circuit model including a signal flow diagram is established to analyze the mechanism of the proposed antenna in detail. Moreover, the Y-shaped coupling feeding lines are introduced to control the coupling with the antenna to achieve broadband and good impedance matching. The prototype of the antenna is fabricated and measured. The measured results show that the antenna with simple structures can operate at the band of 3.2–5.22 GHz (48%) with high port-to-port isolation (35 dB) and stable gain (9 ± 1 dBi). The measured results show good agreement with simulated results, especially in cross-polarization discrimination ratio (>27 dB) and the half power beam width (61° ± 3° at the E-plane, 68° ± 3° at the H-plane). In summary, the proposed antenna could be a good candidate for 5G sub-6 GHz base station applications.

A broadband dual‐polarised antenna with L‐shaped strips for long‐term evolution (LTE)/5th generation mobile networks (5G) is proposed in this article. Based on the principle of multi‐mode resonance, wide bandwidth is achieved with L‐shaped strips and H‐shaped strips. The metal strips and dipoles are printed on the same substrate, which also contributes to antenna miniaturisation. The short pins are designed for impedance matching and improving isolation. The metal reflector is designed to control beamwidth and increase gain. A prototype was fabricated using an easy Printed Circuit Board technique to verify the proposed design. Low‐profile of 0.2λ0 (λ0 is the free‐space wavelength at the centre frequency) is achieved. The measured results show that the relative bandwidth is 74% (2.3–5.0 GHz) at Voltage Standing Wave Ratio <1.8 while the isolation is more than 24 dB covering the LTE/5G modern band. In addition, the in‐band average gain is 9 dBi.

In this article, a compact dual-band antenna is presented for sub-6 GHz base station applications. The main radiator of the antenna is composed of ring-shaped dipoles and Y-shaped dipoles. Broadband impedance matching is achieved by complementarily coupling between the two types of dipoles. The measured results show the bandwidth of the proposed antenna can cover from 2.06 to 3.69 GHz in the low-frequency band with an around isolation of 30 dB, and cover from 4.79 to 5.02 GHz in the high-frequency band with an around isolation of 25 dB. The in-band peak realized gain is 9.12 ± 1.02 dBi. Since the proposed antenna operates at N41, N78, and N79 bands in China, it can be a potential element for full sub-6 GHz base station applications.
