Broadband directional rhombic nanoantenna for optical wireless communications systems

Abstract: In this paper, an optimized four-nanowire rhombic nanoantenna (RNA) is proposed and numerically analyzed in terms of directivity and efficiency. The suggested design achieves a directivity of 23.4 with 84.5% radiation efficiency at a wavelength of 1550 nm. Further, the suggested nanoantenna (NA) design offers a high gain of 18.5 with an enhancement of 172%, compared to the previously reported plasmonic horn NA. Additionally, the wireless transmission power of the nanolink based on the optimized rhombic design … Show more

“…Recently, Optical-Wireless-NoCs (OWiNoCs) have been proposed as an approach that combines optical wires with optical wireless links as a mean for intra/inter-chip communication [10][11][12][13]. Today, research on optical wireless links over long distances stands on established technologies and methods, whereas it is still in early stages at on-chip-scale distances.…”

“…An important requirement for optical antennas for OWiNoCs is a high gain in the longitudinal direction (onchip plane). On this frame, two types of antennas have been developed in recent years, the plasmonic and the dielectric ones [10][11][12][13][18][19][20], both with their specific traits [20]. Dielectric antennas [10,20] allow to reach very high gain in the longitudinal direction, between 16-23 dB.…”

“…Zhao et al [16] designed an Archimedean nanospiral antenna for solar energy application with a high harvesting efficiency of about 80% at a wavelength of 500 nm and a maximum directivity about 3.5. In 2020, Elsaid et al [17] proposed and analyzed an optimized four-nanowire rhombic NA in terms of directivity and efficiency. Elsaid's design achieved a directivity of 23.4 and radiation efficiency of 84.5% at a wavelength of 1550 nm.…”

“…In this paper, the 3D finite integration technique (FIT) [17] is utilized to investigate and analyze the performance of the suggested rectangular spiral NA. A spiral NA is particularly chosen in our work as it is efficient in collecting the solar energy, and it is a frequency independent NA which operates over a wide frequency range.…”
