Broadacre farm productivity and profitability in south‐western Australia

Abstract: This paper examines broadacre farm performance in south‐western Australia. This region has experienced pronounced climate variability and volatile commodity prices since the late 1990s. Relationships between productivity and profitability are explored using panel data from 47 farms in the study region. The data are analysed using nonparametric methods. “…On the other hand the Hicks-Moorsteen productivity index is welldefined under weak conditions on technology (weak assumptions of strong disposability) and thus more reliable than the MPI TFP index. For these reasons some new studies employs the Hicks-Moorsteen TFP index, for example Arjomandi et al (2014), Islam et al (2014) and so on.…”

“…Few applications of this index to the agricultural sector exist in the literature despite its attractive features. Islam, Xayavong, and Kingwell (2014), Khan, Salim, and Bloch (2015), Tozer and Villano (2013) applied it to Australian agriculture; Baležentis (2015), Rahman and Salim (2013) used the Färe-Primont index to assess the productivity of agriculture in Lithuania and Bangladesh, respectively; Baráth and Fertő (2017) considered a sample of European countries and employed macro-level data; and Dakpo et al (2018) have estimated the Färe-Primont index for a specific sample of French beef farms.…”
