Broad tunability of grating coupled surface-emitting laser with external cavity

Abstract: The wavelength tuning properties of an InGaAs Grating Coupled Surface Emitting Laser (GCSEL) are presented. Wide, continuous tunable laser oscillation has been observed over a range of 115nm, between 900nm-1015nm, under pulsed current excitation. Different External Cavities have been studied to achieve the optimal performance.

“…Picosecond optical pulse generation from GCSEL is of interest because of their unique characteristics such as wide spectral tunability [1], large output transverse mode properties, and high power based on a GCSEL MOPA system [2]. In addition, an external cavity incorporating a GCSEL can utilize the grating dispersion for spectral filtering, gain flattening [3] and wavelength tuning for a modelocked laser.…”

“…Recently, the grating-coupled surface emitting lasers (GCSELs) have become a subject of considerable research interest 1,2 . Due to the built-in off-resonance grating structure, this type of laser offers the advantage of exceptionally good suppression of parasitic feedback as well as a possibility to employ the grating for the broadband spectral control.…”
