Broad ligament hernia successfully repaired by single‐incision laparoscopy: A case report

Abstract: A 52-year-old woman with a history of two parturitions presented with lower abdominal pain. Multi-detector CT of the abdomen showed discontinuity of the sigmoid colon near the broad ligament on the left side. We assigned a provisional diagnosis of an internal hernia progressing through a defect in the broad ligament. SILS revealed a total broad ligament defect on the left side but no signs of ischemic, necrotic bowel. We successfully repaired the broad ligament defect with suturing. At the 2-month follow-up, t… Show more

“…SILS has the benefit of good cosmesis and the safety is assured by the easy conversion to conventional multiport laparoscopic surgery by additional ports [ 8 ]. Some reports have shown the feasibility of using SILS for other internal hernias, such as broad ligament hernia [ 9 ]. Internal hernias are sometimes difficult to be preoperatively definitively diagnosed and SILS is especially useful for internal hernia as minimally invasive surgery [ 9 ].…”

“…BLH is a rare female-specific internal hernia that accounts for 4% to 5% of all internal hernias [1]. There has been an increase in the number of BLH cases reported in Japan [2,[4][5][6][7]. This trend may be associated with the advanced aging of the Japanese population, or could be explained by publication bias because most of the reports from Japan were related to laparoscopic surgery.…”

“…Because of the rarity of BLH, a standard procedure for BLH repair has yet to be determined. As defects in the mesometrium are small in size, simple closure is generally selected [4][5][6][7][13][14][15]. From their experience of the recurrence case, Aisu et al [2].…”
