British Museum Natural Radiocarbon Measurements XIV

Abstract: The following list consists of dates for archaeologic and some geologic samples, mostly measured from January 1978 to December 1979. The dates were obtained by liquid scintillation counting of benzene using the laboratory procedures outlined in previous lists (see, eg, BM-VIII, R, 1976, v 18, p 16). The dates are expressed in radiocarbon years relative to ad 1950 based on the Libby half-life for 14C of 5570 yr, and are corrected for isotopic fractionation (δ13C values are relative to PDB). No corrections have … Show more

“…40 AD ± 120 yrs = 80 BC-160 AD; Mahé and Sourdat 1972); and 3) the oldest, at 2035 ± 35 ybp (ca. 85 BC ± 35 yrs = 120-50 BC; Burleigh et al 1982). The calibrated ages for these three specimens, respectively, calculate as: 1) 592-1895 AD [less precise range due to younger age]; 2) 197 BC-390 AD; and 3) 163 BC-52 AD.…”

“…Large and small mammal bones have been collected from different parts of Swildons Hole in Somerset, and these have been dated at between 800 and 2000 years old (Burleigh et al, 1982). The sources of the bones have been reconstructed and described (Andrews, 1990), and there is no evidence for bone concentrations occurring by transport within the cave.…”
