Increasing attention has been paid to employing the Automatic Dependent Surveillance‐Broadcast (ADS‐B) technology on unmanned area vehicles (UAVs). The critical challenge therefore emerges, ie, how to effectively schedule the UAVs without interfering the communication. An UAV management framework named uFly is proposed to address this challenge by controlling the total ADS‐B communication traffic over the air. The ADS‐B's interference probability is first modeled. Based on this model, the UAVs' ADS‐B traffic (as well as the number of flying UAVs) should match the manned airplanes' signals. By taking the manned airplanes' signals as the first‐class constraint, uFly then dynamically approves or denies UAVs for flight based on the real‐time number of airplanes. Finally, experiments using different data sets are conducted to verify the superior performance of uFly.

In this work, we develop a realistic threat model for attacks on modern air traffic communication networks and show that current state-of-the-art countermeasures such as multilateration are insufficient. We propose two alternatives, a statistical location verification technique and a grid-based location estimation approach, to deal with the identified threats. We evaluate our proposals using real-world flight data and quantify their effectiveness in terms of aircraft location accuracy, resilience to message injection attacks, attack detection speed, and surveillance coverage.Our results show that the statistical verification approach can increase the effective air traffic surveillance coverage compared to multilateration by a factor of more than 100. Concerning our location estimation method, we find that the mean aircraft location accuracy can be increased by up to 41% in comparison with multilateration while also being able to pinpoint ground-based attackers with a mean error of 145 m for air-based attackers. Finally, we demonstrate that our proposal is lightweight as it does not require any changes to the existing air traffic protocols and transmitters, and is easily implemented using only low-cost hardware.

Efficient Compression of 4D-Trajectory Data in Air Traffic Management

Air traffic management (ATM) is facing a tremendous increase in the amount of available flight data, particularly four-dimensional (4D) trajectories. Computational requirements for analysis and storage of such bulk of data are steeply increasing. Compression is one key technology to address this challenge. In this paper we propose two techniques for compressing air traffic 4D trajectories. Our first technique analyzes a set of samples and computes a prediction for the most likely picked successor coordinate by a random walker. The second technique, i.e., referential compression, compresses a 4D trajectory as a collection of subtrajectory pointers into a reference trajectory. We evaluate our algorithms on trajectory data from the Demand Data Repository provided by EUROCONTROL. We show that a combination of our referential and statistical compression techniques compresses 4D trajectories of all air traffic over Europe in the year 2013 from 60 GB down to 0.78 GB, achieving a compression ratio of more than 75 : 1. The compression ratio for our techniques increases with the number of to-be-compressed flights, whereas standard compression techniques achieve a fixed compressed ratio for any number of flights. Our work contributes toward efficient handling of the increasing amount of traffic data in ATM.Index Terms-Air traffic management (ATM), compression, four dimensional (4D) trajectories.
