Bringing the Elephant into the Room: Integrating Risk into Interdisciplinary Water Programs

Abstract: Problems that require risk management are usually cross‐disciplinary in nature, which makes it difficult to educate students and professionals on common language, skills, and strategies. Recognition of the interdisciplinary nature of many water challenges in terms of quality, allocation, future supply, infrastructure, damages, etc. has led to the establishment of interdisciplinary graduate water programs. Motivated by experience in an interdisciplinary water program at Tufts University, this paper argues that … Show more

“…Read and Kuhl (2015) discuss centrality of risk across a range of water problems and suggest that effective resolution of these problems necessitates interdisciplinary consideration of risk and risk management. They have highlighted the importance of risk‐related challenges and management approaches for several water problems including water quality, water allocation agreements, climate adaptation planning, and infrastructure investments.…”

“…The application of environmentally responsible behavior in various sectors of life, one of which is by applying to the fashion industry and fashion industry players, environmental problems can be overcome. Apart from that, UNESCO has also called for several of its programs so that humans always preserve and protect this earth and be able to pass on the earth and its contents to future generations (Bridgewater, 2016;DeSombre, 2017;Read & Kuhl, 2015).…”

“…The Online Watershed Learning System (OWLS) is an example of a graduate program that allows access to virtual watersheds for study [33]. The more innovative of such programs explicitly incorporate risk analysis [34] and simulation of alternative futures [26]. The DK-WRS has identified three principal challenges to be addressed by emerging interdisciplinary programs: Integrating several disciplines, maintaining depth, and teaching subjects remote from a student's home discipline [29].…”

“…Yet, a need remains unfulfilled. Several innovative graduate curricula have emerged (e.g., Water in the West [39], DK-WRS [29], DANCERS [32,34]), but the literature does not offer a structure for a constructivist, interdisciplinary graduate class that can lead interested students into the discipline. We offer such a structure here.…”
