“…The experimental observation of the surface and interface modes predicted here can be performed by means of Brillouin scattering experiments [24][25][26] and picosecond laser technique. 27 Because many new devices are based on layered structures, 28,29 it is important to understand and characterize propagation of waves in this kind of system.…”

“…The non-splitting type of behaviour has been observed experimentally in an alumina film on aluminium by acoustic microscopy [16], in doped Cr coatings deposited on high speed steel [17], in a titanium film on steel by SBS [18], in diamond-like-films (DCL) [19]. Splitting type of behavior has been observed recently for Si 3 N 4 films on GaAs [9]. Green's function simulations demonstrate that the effect of the thin hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) interlayer located between cBN film and Si substrate on the velocity of the surface acoustic wave (SAW) does not exceed 2% for a thin (16 nm) film and is negligible for cBN films thicker than 100 nm.…”

“…This peak is associated with leaky or pseudo SAW (PSAW) [15]. As θ or kh increase, the PSAM is transferred into leaky interface wave [9,15]. In the same spectral region, another broad peak appears, which with increasing θ becomes narrower, as the associated mode tends towards the Rayleigh mode of cBN.…”

“…Brillouin scattering has proved able to measure the elastic properties of materials, exploiting either bulk acoustic waves [6] or Surface Brillouin Scattering (SBS), i.e. scattering by SAWs [7][8][9][10][11][12]. In particular in the case of layered structures, namely of a single isotropic layer on an anisotropic substrate, the elastic constants of films have been measured, for film thicknesses ranging from hundreds to tens of nanometers [10][11][12].…”
