“…Alkan (2016), for example, found that college belongingness had significant correlations with loneliness, intention to drop out, and satisfaction with the university. College students with a high sense of belonging also exhibited more adaptive help-seeking strategies (Won et al, 2019) and fewer psychological difficulties (Pittman & Richmond, 2007;Thompson et al, 2019).…”

“…It also had significant correlations with loneliness, intention to dropout, satisfaction with the university, and self-report sense of belonging. College students with a high sense of belonging also reported more effective adaptive help-seeking strategies (Won et al, 2019), fewer psychological difficulties (Pittman & Richmond, 2007;Thompson et al, 2019) and loneliness (Mounts, 2004), and higher affective well-being (Çivitci, 2014). Further, several studies showed that belongingness was an essential protective factor on students' psychological health and adjustment in the context of stressors or adversities (Backhaus et al, 2019;Civitci, 2015;Eisenberg et al, 2007;Nuttman-Shwartz, 2019;Zhang et al, 2020).…”

“…It seems that instructors may be able to reduce some negative impacts by establishing teaching presence and social presence . Still, further research is needed to understand these dynamics in periods of social isolation, as students who do not feel a sense of belonging and connection may struggle to engage in self-regulated learning (Won et al, 2021). Moreover, autonomy-the self-directedness that scholars view as a precursor self-regulated learning (e.g., Niemiec & Ryan, 2009)-becomes complicated in situations of emergency remote learning.…”

“…Although a growing number of studies have emphasized the importance of school belonging for mental health and wellbeing, few have examined the sense of belonging of college students. Empirical evidence reported that young adults with a high sense of belonging exhibited fewer psychological problems (Arslan and Tanhan 2019a , b ; Pittman and Richmond 2007 ; Tanhan and Strack 2020 ), more effective adaptive help-seeking strategies (Won et al 2019 ), less loneliness (Arslan 2020 ; Mounts 2004 ), and greater wellbeing (Çivitci 2014 ; Tanhan and Francisco 2019 ). In addition, some research indicated that belonging had a promotive and protective effect on individuals’ mental health and adjustment in the face of adversities–including child maltreatment (Arslan 2020 ; Backhaus et al 2019 ; Eisenberg et al 2007 ; Zhang et al 2020 ), and college belonging might hence mitigate the adverse impacts of psychological maltreatment on spiritual wellbeing.…”
