Brief Report: Validation of Catalan Version of BRIEF-P

Abstract: The BRIEF-P is one of the most used instruments to measure Executive Function (EF). This report is aimed at showing the psychometric properties of the Catalan version of it. To do this, a random cluster sampling was carried out in Osona (Catalonia), recruiting 417 teachers and 408 parents of children aged 3 to 6 years. As with the original instrument, results show that reliability is excellent and that girls have a better EF than boys in the following areas: Working Memory, Plan/Organize, and Inhibit. Since in… Show more

“…Alternatively, cutoffs from our sample are provided. These results go in line with those found by Bonillo et al (2012), suggesting the likelihood that, within the Spanish framework, raters would be less prone to consider as atypical those behaviors expressed by the BRIEF-P items.…”

“…As a matter of fact, such kind of differences has been previously found by Thorell et al (2013) in a cross-cultural study examining parent and teacher ratings using the Childhood Executive Functioning Inventory (CHEXI) across four countries, so that, the urge upon the availability of culturally adapted norms was stressed. Regarding to the BRIEF-P, a previously published study validating the scale in a Catalonian children sample (Bonillo, Araujo Jiménez, Jané Ballabriga et al, 2012) found lower raw mean scores than those reported in the normative American sample and consequently alternative normative measures for that population were proposed.…”

“…First, the factor structure of the BRIEF has been queried, with one study showing a one-factor solution (Bodnar, Prahme, Cutting, Denckla, & Mahone, 2007) rather than the original three-factor structure (Gioia, Isquith, Retzlaff, et al, 2002). The preschool version (BRIEF-P) reportedly has a slightly different factor structure from the original BRIEF, with different scales loading on the three factors (Bonillo, Jiménez, Ballabriga, Capdevila, & Riera, 2012;Isquith, Gioia, & Espy, 2004). Further, for children with developmental disorders such as ASD and ADHD, most scales and indexes are elevated (e.g., Gioia, Isquith, Kenworthy, & Barton, 2002;Semrud-Clikeman et al, 2010;Smithson et al, 2013), thereby raising the question of whether the clinical scales provide useful profile information beyond the three indexes and the GEC.…”
