Brief Report: Seroprevalence of Pertussis Infection in HIV-Infected Adults in the United States

Abstract: Pertussis is a resurgent infection that can cause significant morbidity among adults. CD4+ T cells are necessary for its clearance, but pertussis studies in HIV-infected adults are limited to case reports. We analyzed stored serum samples from 299 HIV-infected adults to determine the seroprevalence of pertussis among this population. We found that 4.3% of subjects had serologic evidence of recent pertussis infection, and annual incidence of pertussis infection among subjects not vaccinated against pertussis in… Show more

“…Proteomics further showed that the complement cascade activation pathway was enriched in proteins positively associated with immunological hyperactivation features including CLU. As previously demonstrated, the complement activation contributes to a chronic pro-inflammatory environment even in well-controlled HIV infected adults ( 54 ). Whereas the activation of the complement cascade during acute HIV infection is largely via activation of the classical pathway ( 52 , 55 ), recent studies highlight how complement factors bind IgG3 on exhausted B cell subsets (TLM) in HIV-positive individuals ( 44 , 56 ).…”

“…Whooping cough is considered a childhood disease; however, its prevalence among adults may be underreported. Studies among adult PWH are anecdotal, but a cross-sectional seroprevalence study conducted in the United States showed a 1000-fold higher prevalence among PWH than the general population [ 237 ]. In addition, case reports show a severe course of the diseases among people with AIDS [ 238 , 239 ].…”
