Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) Health Survey After Midline Laparotomy With the Rectus Sheath Block (RSB) Analgesia: A Randomised Trial of Patients With Cancer and Benign Disease

Abstract: Background/Aim: Our original hypothesis was that the rectus sheath block (RSB) analgesia could enhance patient satisfaction and decrease pain following midline laparotomy. Patients and Methods: Initially, 56 patients were randomized into four groups; control group (n=12), single-dose (n=16), repeated-dose (n=12) and continuous infusion (n=16) RSB analgesia groups. The BPI (Brief Pain Inventory) survey was conducted preoperatively and at one and four weeks and 12 months postoperatively. The patients pain 24 h p… Show more

“…This is a general limitation of the multidimensional pain scales and therefore some patients may consider the scale too laborious. The four most often used unidimensional pain intensity scales are the BPI, NRS, VAS, and VRS (5,(14)(15)(16).…”

“…Pain following surgery is an anticipated annoyance of most operative procedures and 30-40% of patients endure moderate to strong pain following surgery despite the intensive use of different analgesic methods (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6). Severe pain and satisfaction of the patients (SFS) following operation are associated with quality of life (QoL) issues, such as anxiety, depression and other psychiatric symptoms, sleep disorders, feeling tired, and inability to attend various events (7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13).…”

“…The primary outcome measures were the plasma concentrations of CAT, NT and MDA biomarkers measured at three time points with high-sensitivity assays: before (PRE), immediately after (POP1) and 24 h postoperatively (POP2) in the control group versus three active groups. The patient satisfaction, the overall pain at rest NRS r and at 2 kg pressing NRS p were surveyed and filed on a 11point numeric rating scale as shown previously (17).…”
