Bridging the rural-urban dichotomy in land use science

Abstract: Rural and urban areas are often conceptualized as two separate entities and studied accordingly. However, in reality, they are related in multiple ways. Here we explore this relation between rural and urban areas from a land use perspective. We argue that land should be characterized along a gradient from rural to urban. Further, we argue that land use along this gradient typically combines both rural and urban functions. Finally, we point at the complex patterns of migration and mobility between different typ… Show more

“…The traditional concept of urban and rural areas defines them as distinct entities, and their main connection in terms of land use is through flows of agricultural products from rural to urban areas (Seto et al, 2012). A study on the rural-urban dichotomy by land use argues that land should be characterised along a gradient from rural to urban and suggests the need for inclusive approaches (Van Vliet et al, 2020).…”

“…This rural-urban gradient did not develop linearly from the city center. Informal settlements represent complex patterns of migration, and Vliet et al in 2020 [7] regard it as a multidirectional process that further blurs the distinction between rural and urban. This rural-urban gradient is neither a gradual transformation of the territory nor a continuum in geography-tenants in the informal settlements are "trans-local".…”
