“…All specimens examined are listed in Appendix I. Measurements were made with a digital caliper to the nearest 0.1 mm. All anatomical terms and methods of taking meristic counts follow Kizirian (1996) except as modified by Doan (2003) and Doan and Schargel (2003).…”

“…I examined comparative material of all described and one undescribed species of Riama from Colombia and 15 taxa from Ecuador, Venezuela and Trinidad & Tobago (specimens examined are listed in Appendix). In addition, some comparative data were taken from species descriptions in Uzzell (1958), Kizirian (1996), Doan & Schargel (2003), Köhler & Lehr (2004) and Rivas et al (2005 Andersson (1914) described Proctoporus columbianus based on four specimens in the Swedish Museum of Natural History, two males and two females, none of which was referenced with a specific collection number. The syntypes were originally catalogued together as NRM 1631, and were later separated under NRM 1631, NRM 1633, NRM 1634 and NRM 6168.…”

“…Andersson's (1914) incorrect characterization of Riama columbiana has had important consequences in the Riama systematics. Kizirian & Coloma (1991), Kizirian (1995Kizirian ( , 1996 and Doan & Schargel (2003) understandably considered the specimens KU 169946-48, from Tenerife, Valle del Cauca, Colombia, to be R. columbiana, and they derived species diagnoses from those specimens. Similarly, Doan (2003) and Doan & Castoe (2005) used these same specimens to represent R. columbiana in her phylogenetic analysis of Proctoporus sensu lato, and to allocate this species within Riama respectively.…”

“…Data for the species of the P. luctuosus group were taken from Uzzell (1958). Data for P. inanis were taken from Doan and Schargel (2003), and data for the species of the P. pachyurus group were taken from Doan and Castoe (2003). Data for Venezuelan species of Euspondylus were taken from Mijares-Urrutia et al (2001).…”

“…Currently, Proctoporus comprises 29 species of small (,100 mm snout-vent length [SVL]) secretive lizards that are distributed in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, as well as on Trinidad (Doan and Castoe, 2003;Doan and Schargel, 2003;Kizirian, 1996;Uzzell, 1958Uzzell, , 1970. While the Ecuadorian species have been subjected to a recent revision (Kizirian, 1996), the species occurring in Peru and Bolivia have not been considered as a whole since the work of Uzzell (1970).…”
