Bridging research and clinical care – the comprehensive cancer centre

Abstract: Comprehensive cancer centres (CCCs) are at the heart of the landscape of cancer research, education and care in Europe. They are vital hubs where the historic gaps in the research to clinical care continuum are bridged. CCCs have established hallmarks, but a greater emphasis is needed in Europe to create more effective CCCs using the partnership model of university medical centres and university research departments and institutes. This review will summarise the organisational structures and processes essentia… Show more

“…The models of the infrastructures suggested above can be based on the structures of some existing networks and some key recommendations listed below. CCCs such as those accredited by the OECI [9], the German Cancer Aid [18], or CCCoEs designated by the EACS with focus on translational research [7] will be key components of the three infrastructures. These centres are well-positioned to form networks, both nationally and internationally, and some indeed have done so, both within and beyond national boundaries.…”

“…The latter goal emphasizes the need to create integrated, networked and geographically distributed infrastructures that can entail Comprehensive Cancer Centres of Excellence (CCCoEs) meeting the Excellence standards of the EACS [7], Comprehensive Cancer Centres accredited by the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI), cancer research and clinical centres and technological platforms. CCCs are crucial to establish closer links between research and healthcare systems [8,9]. By integrating cancer care and prevention with research and education, CCCoEs and CCCs are well-positioned to boost innovation and deliver state-of-the-art comprehensive multidisciplinary cancer care.…”

“…The Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) has launched an accreditation programme that permits cancer centres to assess their qualification as a comprehensive cancer centre (Saghatchian et al ., , Oberst ). The OECI programme has been a great success and has resulted in the assessment of around 50 comprehensive cancer centres in Europe.…”

“…Organisation of multidisciplinary cancer treatment/care, prevention, research and education and the concept of the CCC are ways to assure high‐quality research environments and to bridge the gap with the healthcare area (Oberst, ). OECI and German Cancer Aid provide educational activities on organisational aspects and offer methodologies to designate CCCs.…”
