Bridging Proprietary Modelling and Open-Source Model Management Tools: The Case of PTC Integrity Modeller and Epsilon

Abstract: Abstract-While the majority of research on Model-Based Software Engineering revolves around open-source modelling frameworks such as EMF, the use of commercial and closedsource modelling tools such as RSA, Rhapsody, MagicDraw and PTC Integrity Modeller appears to be the norm in industry at present. This technical gap can prohibit industrial users from reaping the benefits of state-of-the-art research-based tools in their practice. In this paper, we discuss an attempt to bridge a proprietary UML modelling tool … Show more

“…Moreover, EMF-SYNCER can perform an initial synchronization with millions of objects in reasonable time and that, for small cardinalities, it is performed in instant time up to 500K elements. In our experiments, the cardinality of elements considered has been increased by one order of magnitude with respect to the cardinality of the specimens considered in previous experiments, e.g., [21], thus providing a better insight on the capabilities of state-of-the-art MDE technology for scenarios involving large data sets.…”

“…While MDE-agnostic applications can be reverse engineered [18], [19] or adapted [20], a few approaches [21], [22] build interfaces with MDE technology for MDEagnostic systems at run time. These approaches have been evaluated with a number of case studies used in industry.…”

“…In this regard, the Massif project facilities brought the possibility of managing an actual EMF-compatible Simulink model representation in a broader range of model management scenarios at the expense of having to co-manage both artefacts. In contrast, our approach uses the modelling technology API to translate high-level CRUD operations at model type level on-demand in a similar fashion to other Epsilon bridges such as [20,35].…”

“…In [14] Hutchesson et al, discussed about the tool for the private UML modeling(PTC Integrity Modeller) which is used to design the model based development of critical systems and for open source software the tool they used was Epsilon. They evaluated the open source software implementation in Epsilon with IM on the basis of performance, incrementality and interoperability.…”
