Bridging a Culture: The Design of Museo Soumaya

Abstract: Fernando Romero and Armando Ramos of Fernando Romero EnterprisE (FREE) describe how the firm's design for an iconic museum in Mexico City, which adopted complex computational techniques, required them to develop an integrated and highly collaborative approach to design; with a central digital 3‐D model being applied throughout the construction phase.

“…PH meshes are in general more constrained than PQ meshes, as they, for example, require non-convex faces to create a watertight cover of a surface with negative Gaussian curvature . While purely convex hexagonal faces have been used for architectural structures [De Leon 2012;Romero and Ramos 2013], the resulting facade is not watertight. One approach for hexagonal meshing is using the duality with triangular meshes, either by triangulating the Gauss map [Almegaard et al 2007], or by tangent plane intersections [Troche 2008[Troche , 2009Zimmer et al 2012].…”

“…Furthermore, the intention is to be able to drive production geometries and information to the fullest extent possible, as opposed to the common practice of handing over design geometry to production specialists for shop drawings and post-rationalisation (Romero & Ramos, 2013, Sanchez-Alvarez, 2010, Peña de Leon, 2012.…”
