Aquaculture and salt-culture are relevant economic activities in the Brazilian Coastal Zone (BCZ). However, automatic discrimination of such activities from other water-related covers/uses is not an easy task. In this sense, convolutional neural networks (CNN) have the advantage of predicting a given pixel’s class label by providing as input a local region (named patches or chips) around that pixel. Both the convolutional nature and the semantic segmentation capability provide the U-Net classifier with the ability to access the “context domain” instead of solely isolated pixel values. Backed by the context domain, the results obtained show that the BCZ aquaculture/saline ponds occupied ~356 km2 in 1985 and ~544 km2 in 2019, reflecting an area expansion of ~51%, a rise of 1.5× in 34 years. From 1997 to 2015, the aqua-salt-culture area grew by a factor of ~1.7, jumping from 349 km2 to 583 km2, a 67% increase. In 2019, the Northeast sector concentrated 93% of the coastal aquaculture/salt-culture surface, while the Southeast and South sectors contained 6% and 1%, respectively. Interestingly, despite presenting extensive coastal zones and suitable conditions for developing different aqua-salt-culture products, the North coast shows no relevant aqua or salt-culture infrastructure sign.

Esta pesquisa objetiva identificar as variações da cobertura vegetal entre os anos de 2012 e 2015 no complexo estuarino do Rio Piranhas-Assú (RN). Foi realizado balanço hídrico, a partir de dados de precipitação, temperatura e evapotranspiração potencial. Foram obtidas imagens do LandSat 8 para monitoramento temporal da cobertura vegetal através da técnica de SAVI. O balanço hídrico ratificou a propensão do ambiente aos efeitos da deficiência hídrica, mesmo em períodos de maior precipitação, com o maior déficit hídrico registrado em agosto (2012) e dezembro (2015), atingindo aproximadamente -190 mm. Alguns trechos com predominância de solo exposto em 2015 eram ocupados predominantemente por vegetação em 2013. Para os fragmentos de vegetação observou-se diminuição de até 41,8%, aumentando a exposição direta dos solos. Portanto, a metodologia utilizada apresentou-se como alternativa viável para estudos relacionados às variações temporais da cobertura vegetal.

The extraction of sea salt depends on the occupation of large areas at the estuary banks, many of them inserted in Permanent Preservation Areas (PPAs). Thus, the objective was to evaluate the economic viability of Environmental Offsets (EO) as an alternative to the unoccupied PPAs in the saltworks. In order to do so, 27 solar saltworks installed in the region of the Brazilian White Coast were evaluated for the occupation of PPAs - measured using images from satellite, georeferenced, vectored with corresponding PPA bands generated - and estimated to EO (Impact Degree x Sum of the investments necessary to implement the project) and Economic Impact (Net Present Value, with long-term interest rate of 7%) of vacating PPAs. It was considered that EO was feasible whenever the costs resulting from it were lower than the economic impact caused by the vacancy of the PPAs. The PPAs were tthe productive area of the saltworksthat occupied 13.70% of PPAs. For all the evaluated enterprises the value corresponding to EO was lower than the Economic Impact resulting from the vacancy of the PPAs. Thus, EO is an economically viable and more attractive alternative to the eviction of PPAs by the saltworks industry and may also provide environmental gains due to the financing of conservation units in the areas of influence of the enterprises. However, there is a need to improve the methodology used to estimate the EO, since a maximum limit is set, the environmental impacts caused by the projects are underestimated.
