The human populations of the Iberian Peninsula are the varied result of a complex mixture of cultures throughout history, and are separated by clear social, cultural, linguistic or geographic barriers. The stronger genetic differences between closely related populations occur in the northern third of Spain, a phenomenon commonly known as “micro-differentiation”. It has been argued and discussed how this form of genetic structuring can be related to both the rugged landscape and the ancient societies of Northern Iberia, but this is difficult to test in most regions due to the intense human mobility of previous centuries. Nevertheless, the Spanish autonomous community of Asturias shows a complex history which hints of a certain isolation of its population. This, joined together with a difficult terrain full of deep valleys and steep mountains, makes it suitable for performing a study of genetic structure, based on mitochondrial DNA and Y-Chromosome markers. Our analyses do not only show that there are micro-differentiation patterns inside the Asturian territory, but that these patterns are strikingly similar between both uniparental markers. The inference of barriers to gene flow also indicates that Asturian populations from the coastal north and the mountainous south seem to be relatively isolated from the rest of the territory. These findings are discussed in light of historic and geographic data and, coupled with previous evidence, show that the origin of the current genetic patterning might indeed lie in Roman and Pre-Roman sociopolitical divisions.

Europe witnessed massive migration away from rural areas throughout the 20th century. Spain was no exception to the rule, albeit with differences in timing and pace, and the population in Cantabria constitutes a paradigmatic case. Here, the rural exodus began early – before the mid-20th century – in some mountainous districts, but reached a peak in the 1960s and continued throughout the following decades. Since the 1990s, population levels in rural municipalities have fallen at a slower rate, while the population of the region as a whole has increased slightly. Disturbingly, the rural population has continued to decline in the early 21st century, in an overall context of almost zero population growth. The demographic trends analyzed here are not only different in time, but also in space. With the partial exception of regional capitals and their neighbouring communities, municipalities in mountain districts have witnessed such a substantial decline in their populations that they have experienced a genuine process of depopulation. This case does not explain the all-similar cases in rural Europe as a whole, but it can help in interpreting other comparable processes in different regions of southern Europe where depopulation reached its maximum in the second half of the 20th century and still continues today.

Cuando se cumplen casi tres décadas desde el arranque del turismo rural en España, se percibe un déficit de atención a la circulación de los instrumentos y modelos que han marcado su desarrollo. Sin embargo, los procesos de recomposición del medio rural europeo están profundamente afectados por flujos globales de políticas públicas en las que el turismo ocupa un lugar predominante. Por ello esta investigación propone una lectura del desarrollo del turismo en el medio rural a través del marco de la transferencia de los programas LEADER y Planes en Destino, instrumentos de la Política Europea de Desarrollo Rural y de la Política Turística nacional, respectivamente. Adoptando el marco analítico propuesto por Dolowitz y Marsh (2000) se hace recapitulación de la literatura que estudia la implantación de ambas políticas con el objetivo de sistematizar y caracterizar su transferencia. En particular, se aporta el estudio de su contenido desde una perspectiva evolutiva atendiendo a los modelos de turismo que se ponen en circulación.
