Breeding technology of alloplasmic wheat

Abstract: Novel wheat bearing alloplasm was bred via nucleo substitution backcross. Through comparative study between the hornonucleo-heterocytoplasmic lines and homocytoplasm-heteronuclear lines, it was shown that a portion of the alloplasm types were able to produce useful genetic effects on wheat yield, grain quality, tolerance of salt and resistance to diseases. Among the species studied, the cytoplasm of Aegilops crassa, Ae. squarrosa and Ae. vcntricosa contributed the best effect. Specific combination of nuclear g… Show more

“…Some progress has been made on breeding new strains with salt tolerance and of good quality. ÔXiaoshan 2134Õ is a good example, where a widely-planted (in South China) spring wheat, ÔJin 2148Õ, has been significantly improved (Wu et al 1998a). Second, Ae.…”

“…With Ae. crassa as the cytoplasmic donor and cultivars or strains of common wheat, Triticum aestivum L., (ÔJin 2148Õ, ÔCA8057Õ, ÔJian 26Õ, ÔJian 31Õ, 9D-27-261, ÔFu 63Õ, ÔCA80224Õ and ÔSMH1694Õ) as the nuclear donors, eight alloplasmic common wheats were produced by distant crossing followed by substitution backcrossing (Liu et al 1997, Wu et al 1998a). In 1991, (Ae.…”
