Breeding strategies for the development of the Australian beef industry: an overview

Abstract: Strategic directions for the period 2010 to 2020 and research and development needs are considered for the Australian Beef Industry from the breeding sector’s perspective. These are related to the way major technologies are developed for an industry, the current status and likely trends in market development and appropriation of benefits to the consumer, processor, commercial beef producer and breeding sectors. The primary strategic needs identified are: (i) understand the functional biology for the major prod… Show more

“…For this revolution to be realized in the beef production sector, stakeholders need to prepare strategic long-term plans to accommodate the challenges of limited resources such as land, labour and capital. Animal breeding is a vital component of livestock production that requires long-term planning to prepare the livestock industry for the potential benefits of genetic improvement (Hammond, 2006). Strategies used to meet this requirement would benefit from a review of predictive Outlook on AGRICULTURE Vol 38, No 4…”

“…Understanding the factors that affect animal growth and development can provide tools to optimize profitability and meat quality [ 60 , 61 ]. The yield of meat cuts is mainly due to the deposition of muscle and adipose tissue in an animal’s body [ 62 ].…”

“…While RFI does not tell us much about the control of pasture intake, research into the mechanisms contributing to RFI have highlighted differences in maintenance requirements, digestibility and efficiency of utilisation of energy for gain among individuals and among breeds (Cantalapiedra-Hijar et al 2018). Selection for improved growth rate or feed efficiency in livestock has contributed to the development of more efficient genetics (Hammond 2006). The following question remains: does selection under confinement feeding reflect efficiency under grazing conditions?…”
