Breeding site records of three sympatric vultures in a mountainous cliff in Kahara-Thathri, Jammu & Kashmir, India

Abstract: The current communication deals with the breeding records of three sympatric vultures, viz., Himalayan Vulture Gyps himalayensis, Egyptian Vulture Neophron percnopterus, and Bearded vulture Gypaetus barbatus from a mountain cliff in Kahara, Thathri, a part of upper Chenab catchment in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Made of twigs and lined by dry grass, the nests mostly east-facing, were built on the ledges or in cavities and small caves on cliffs well protected from predators. The inaccessibility, r… Show more

“…The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, home to 552 bird species [9] forms a critical Endemic Bird Area (EBA 128) with 11 restricted-range species [10] . While the valley of Kashmir is home to many migratory as well as resident birds [11] , the Jammu region holds a rich avifaunal diversity as well [12][13][14][15][16][17] . The aim of the present study is to explore diversity patterns (in terms of species composition, richness, abundance) and determine the migration and conservation status of birds in and around the Banihal town of District Ramban in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir.…”

“…Despite high raptor diversity and species of conservation interest, the information on distribution and diversity of diurnal raptor communities is scanty and equivocal for the sub-tropical forests in the region. Forming one of the largest groups among the birds in the region [63], the raptors have not attracted the attention of bird ecologists from this part of the region, except for a breeding record by [64]. The current work aims to document diversity, richness, abundance, habitat guild and threat status of raptor communities in the Shiwalik region of UT of Jammu and Kashmir.…”

“…Vultures occupy a vital position in an ecosystem as efficient scavengers (Kichloo et al 2020). The Himalayan vulture feeds on old carcasses and typically eat only fleshy parts (Rasmussen and Anderton 2005), whereas bearded vulture usually disdains the actual meat and take bone marrow (Hiraldo et al 1979;Brown 1988;Wani et al 2018).…”
