This paper reviews information about a unique and iconic breed of the Orenburg Oblast, the homeland and the only place where the best herds of Orenburg down-hair goats in Russia are concentrated. Three types of these small ruminant animals are widespread on the territory of the region: Orenburg purebred gray goats, Orenburg purebred white goats, as well as crossbred white goats of F1 White Don × White Orenburg. Currently, at the farms of the Orenburg region, animals are selected according to their phenotype, with selected traits being color, weight and length of down hair. In recent years, the Orenburg goat breed has become an object of genetic research using various marker systems including immunogenetic, microsatellite, mtDNA and SNP markers. Overall, these studies evidence about the uniqueness of the allele pool in the landmark native breed of the Orenburg goats, which is a complex dynamic genetic system, prioritizing its further in-depth genome research and breeding applications.

The productivity of sheep depends on a number of quantitative characteristics and, above all, on the live weight, clip, length, fineness, and density of wool. The article presents the nature of the heritability of these traits in meat breeds of Etti merino, Dohne, and Australian meat merino breeds imported to the foothills of the southeastern region of Kazakhstan. It has been established that the efficiency of breeding in experimental sheep depends on the degree of heritability of the bred trait, and that the improvement of productive traits of sheep largely depends on their heritability and variability. As a result of comparing the level of development of live weight, clip, density, length, and fineness of wool by the method of a single-factor variance complex, it was found that the genotypic diversity of economically useful traits in experimental animals is mainly objective. This is especially noticeable when determining the live weight and clip of wool from mother-sheep and daughter-sheep received from them at the same age. Moreover, the older the animals, the clearer this manifestation becomes. Approximately the same pattern is observed in both the density and length of the wool.

The Romanov breed was evaluated using immunological and genetic markers. The seven blood group systems were characterized with a greater accuracy than in previous works on sheep in the Russian Federation, and were compared to eight ruminant species. Unlike other breeds, Romanov sheep have more HBA than HBB alleles. The genotype number at the transferrin locus is limited to 3–4 compared to 6–11 in the other breeds. At the albumin locus, the majority of the identified genotypes were heterozygotes, unlike the other breeds studied. In the prealbumin locus, the Romanov breed was the only one where all the genotypes were heterozygous. In this breed, a polymorphism was established for two loci responsible for high ovulation rates. Based on different genetic markers, the prevalence of heterozygotes in the Romanov sheep could determine their higher viability. A cluster analysis showed the close proximity of 12 populations of the Romanov breed, as the breeding stock come from the Yaroslavl region.
