“…2). Damage to cavity walls, indicating predation by Great Spotted Woodpeckers (Perrins 1979), or claw marks and the nest pulled out through the cavity entrance, indicating Pine Martens (Walankiewicz 2002;Misík and Paclík 2007), were not recorded.…”

“…The forest supports a rich and diverse predator fauna of over 30 species, which depredate birds and/or their nests (Tomiałojć et al 1984). The most important predators of cavity-nesting birds include the Great Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos major, Yellownecked Mouse Apodemus flavicollis, Forest Dormouse Dryomys nitedula, Red Squirrel Sciurus vulgaris, Pine Marten Martes martes, and Weasel Mustela nivalis (Walankiewicz 1991(Walankiewicz , 2002Wesołowski 2002;Rowiński 2004, 2012;Czeszczewik et al 2008). These predators have different modes of attack, and are variously active throughout the day and night, accessing all parts of the forest from the ground to the tree canopy.…”

“…The pressure of nest predators in BNP fluctuated strongly across years (Walankiewicz 2002, Czeszczewik et al 2008, Wesołowski and Maziarz 2009); thus, the chance of a Marsh Tit nest being depredated could vary across years for reasons independent of the birds' actions. Therefore, it would be worthwhile to include ''year'' as a separate factor in the analysis.…”

“…Eurasian Jays (Garrulus glandarius) could presumably be involved as well, but no case of their attacks on nests in cavities has been recorded in .30 yr of study. No nest-attacking snakes or arthropods have been recorded (Walankiewicz 2002, Wesołowski 2002, Czeszczewik et al 2008. Conspecific nest attacks, such as recorded in House Wrens (Troglodytes aedon; Belles-Isles and Picman 1986), are not known for this species.…”

“…Predator abundance and potential predator species may also differ between managed forests and natural ones. Even in unmanaged forest fragments surrounded by modified landscape, forest edge species usually dominate hole-nesting birds communities (Johnsson et al 1993), and the extent and the pattern of predation may differ from that under natural conditions (Sandström 1991, Walankiewicz 2002, Wesoło-wski 2002.…”
