“…As previously indicated by Borghi (1988), all the cultivars of barley and bread wheat tested and the majority of the durum cultivars were selected in (and for) non-stress conditions. It is likely that the main environmental constraints serving to reduce yield were, in both situations, the progressive reduction of the water available in the soil coupled with the rise in temperature during the last part of grain filling (Borghi et al, 1990). As pointed out by Martinic (1980) and Borghi et al (1983) and(1992) the traditional genetic improvement for grain yield of winter cereals carried out in the past in the South European countries bordering the Mediterranean sea lead to the selection of genotypes able to avoid stress through an early flowering and a short and fast grain filling period.…”
