Breed effects and genetic parameter estimates for calving difficulty and birth weight in a multibreed population1

Abstract: Birth weight (BWT) and calving difficulty (CD) were recorded on 4,579 first-parity females from the Germplasm Evaluation Program at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC). Both traits were analyzed using a bivariate animal model with direct and maternal effects. Calving difficulty was transformed from the USMARC scores to corresponding -scores from the standard normal distribution based on the incidence rate of the USMARC scores. Breed fraction covariates were included to estimate breed differences. Her… Show more

“…Breeding, calving, and weaning records of GPE females born from 1970 through 2015 were extracted from the USMARC cattle records database. These females represented the eight historic cycles of GPE, as well as the on-going continuous GPE (Ahlberg et al, 2016), initiated with matings for the fall 2007 calving season. Each GPE cycle involved artificially inseminating Angus, Herford and MARC III composite (Cycles IV to VIII; Gregory et al, 1991) females with semen from industry sires representing five to seven breeds.…”

“…Cow weight at pregnancy test (CW) and cumulative weight weaned (WtW) records were obtained on 6211 genotyped females from GPE Cycles VII [ 18 ] and VIII [ 19 ] and the current 18-breed continuous GPE sampling [ 20 ], following procedures developed for random regression analyses of these traits [ 9 ]. Briefly, a record for WtW was created each time a female was exposed to breeding, starting with their initial breeding to calve as a two-year-old.…”

“…Fixed independent variables were sex, contemporary group classifications and linear effects of age on test (all traits except PADG), direct heterosis (fraction of expected breed heterozygosity to account for heterosis), and proportions of each breed. Details of expected breed heterozygosity and breed proportions were described in Ahlberg et al (2016). Random effects for each trait were additive direct genetic effects of 12,033 animals in the pedigree and the residuals.…”
