Breed differences in the histochemical properties of theM. pubo‐ischi‐ofemoralis pars medialismyofibre of domestic cocks

Abstract: 1. Histochemical properties of M. pubo-ischio-femoralis pars medialis (PIF muscle) were compared in 7 breeds of cocks. This muscle was largely composed of Type I fibres and their transitional form (Type I tr). Type IIA fibres were observed in the cranial part. 2. The weight and cross-sectional area of the PIF muscle increased with increasing body weight. However, the relative muscle development to body weight differed among the 7 breeds. 3. A quarter of Type I fibres were of the transitional variety in bantam … Show more

“…Because the PT muscle occupying the surface region over the supracoracoideus has only type IIB myofibres (Suzuki, 1978), the PT muscle does not show any breed differences in myofibre type composition. The caudal part of PIF muscles in the present broilers contained only type I myofibres because of their future large body size (Iwamoto et al, 1993b). In our previous study of Silkie cocks (Nakamura et al, 2003b), the total amount of perimysial and endomysial collagen was 2 .…”

“…The iliotibialis lateralis (post-acetabular part) (ITL) muscle having a lateral surface location in the thigh shows marked breed differences in type IIA and IIB myofibre composition (Iwamoto et al, 1992(Iwamoto et al, , 1998. As the puboischiofemoralis (medial part) (PIF) muscle on the inner surface of the thigh plays a major role in maintaining posture against gravity, it also contains type I myofibres at a higher frequency in breeds with a larger body size (Iwamoto et al, 1993b). In the chicken the PIF muscle matures earlier because of its having larger myofibres compared with the ITL during the early post-hatching period (Iwamoto et al, 1993a).…”
