The COVID-19 pandemic brought to the surface the critical qualities of air – airflow, ventilation, particulates etc. – in relation to the well-being of people living in high-rise. Engineering and architectural research has burgeoned in response. However, in focusing on models of airflow, ventilation and particulates as discrete variables, engineering and architectural discourse fails to capture the diverse ways that air enters into and shapes the everyday lived experience of high-rise dwelling. Drawing on research in Sydney’s Southwestern suburbs, we reveal high-rise as an assemblage that links apartment dwelling with air, via car-dependent suburbanisation, pollution and climate-change induced temperature extremes in the Anthropocene. In addition to viruses, air teems with carbon, insects, noise and pollutants, while viscerally mediating human encounters with fluctuating temperatures. Multiple relations between people, buildings and air unfold simultaneously, confounding attempts to account for air’s elemental milieu through single variables like greenhouse gas or COVID-19. While embedded in relations of power, high-rise assemblages unleash vernacular adaptation that through low-tech and low-cost technologies work to connect suburban high-rise with evolving ecological systems. Recognising the pharmacological quality of air, as both ‘poison’ and ‘cure’, we contrast models of high-rise as encapsulated environments with resident (and other) experiments that orient high-rise to the elements, and the interlinked challenges of urban living in the Anthropocene.

Properly equipped racing pigeons can gather continuous real-time air pollution data while moving through the air at key heights not accessible to the official instruments, as well as from the ground where they are released for their homing flights' (Haraway, 2016). Grasping the airExposure to air pollution and its health risks varies greatly according to the place where one lives (Kelly & Fussell, 2015; WHO, 2013). Not only differences between countries, cities or towns matter, or between cities and countryside, but also, and maybe even more importantly, within each of these settings. A vast amount of literature has aimed at linking these spatial differences to socio-economic indicators demonstrating environmental injustice in terms of class, ethnicity, age, race and other social stratifications (Fecht et al., 2015;Mitchell and Dorling, 2003;Mitchell et al., 2015). Whereas most of this research has started from representations of bad air as spatially fixed, the dynamic, elusive and unstable character of air pollution exposure has increasingly been foregrounded in recent research (Nyarku et al., 2018), as too variations at the microscale (see e.g. Fecht et al., 2016; Tenailleau et al., 2015;Tonne et al., 2019). Technologies for measuring air have simultaneously proliferated, shifting from government-led scientific monitoring and global-scale computer models towards participatory (citizen science) modes of data collection and analysis using simple diffusion tubes and mobile phone apps (Garnett, 2016; see also Kelly & Fussell, 2015;Tan and Smith 2021).These shifts have been paralleled by a shift towards a much higher activist and artistic engagement with the topic, exemplified by both a much higher citizens' involvement with science, and increasing calls for a 'more than science' approach (Hulme 2021), opening up new investigations of our embodied and affective engagements with air (

Feminist technoscientific research with chemicals is proliferating. This critical commentary considers how this scholarship extends environmental justice research on pollution. We are concerned with two key questions: How can we do/design ethical research with chemicals? And, what methods allow for researching chemicals without resorting to an imagined space of purity? We consider unfolding projects which reorient relations with chemicals from villainous objects with violent effects, to chemical kin. We imagine chemical kinship as a concept, an analytical tool, and a mode of relating. Emerging through feminist and anticolonial work with chemicals, it involves a tentativeness towards making normative claims about chemicals because, like kin, these materials are never entirely good nor bad, at once they can both be enabling and harmful. This commentary considers what the unfolding research with chemicals generates, and consolidates conceptualisations of chemical kinship; we ultimately articulate an agenda for ethical research with chemicals as an experimental process of invention.
