Breathing Spaces: Modelling Exposure in Air Pollution Science

Abstract: In this article, I materially situate air pollution exposure as a topic of social and political inquiry by paying attention to the increasing specificity of spaces and sites of exposure in air pollution and health research. Evidence of the unevenness of exposure and differential health effects of air pollution have led to a proliferation of studies on the risks different environments pose to bodies. There are increasingly different airs in air pollution science. In this research, bodies are often rele… Show more

“…In foregrounding the multi-sensual experiences of residents, our research adds thermal, insect and particulate matters to these existing analyses, linking evolving ecological processes to health, housing and home. Through the prism of air, the boundary between outside sensory disruption and indoor space is unsettled, revealing the contradictions and tensions of ‘increasingly different airs’ (Garnett, 2020: 55) in the Anthropocene.…”

“…1 Since then, we have witnessed a growing political ecology engagement with air (e.g. Calvillo, 2018; Calvillo and Garnett, 2019; Engelmann, 2015; Garnett, 2017, 2020; Gustafson, 2021; Kenner et al, 2019; Mostafanezhad, 2021; Nieuwenhuis, 2016; Van Brussel & Huyse, 2019; Verbeek, 2019).…”

“…In a practice like exposomics (Vineis et al 2017), for instance, the search for environmental exposures and universal molecular features is reconfiguring disease risk, including asthma. Yet it is unlikely that this 'holistic' and dynamic view of chemical exposure will be sufficient for identifying complex causal mechanisms that can enable political responses (Garnett, 2020). For TAF, the challenge of making sense of the relations between disease and lived environments is a starting point for multiplying understandings of exposure and generating cross-disciplinary dialogue.…”
